My thoughts would be that you do not have suffient wicking and when the demand gets high your mixture leans off. Reduced airflow will not help. My solution would be a different wick material. By memory the material that alaskastar used was oil spill absorbing sheet used in workshops [Maybe try a packet of sanitary pads] A natural product would be better than the fibreglass insulation like you are currently using.
Also hanging the wick from the top so the pads 1,3,5,7,9...are to the left and pads 2,4,6,8,10... are to the right to increase surface area and turbulance.
Another thought would be to feed the fuel to the top of the wicks like a swamp cooler and feed the excess back to the tank but this maybe difficult.

I believe he's using his new setup, which is just bubbling the gasoline with no insulation. I may be wrong, and it might just be an idea at this time, but that's what I understood, which is why I gave the suggestions I did. And if it is bubbling, it should work.

Also, if you make sure the gas is hotter, you will have it richer. It will be easier to bubble through, and it will fume much more, of course.

Intuitively I just finished redoing the barrel again. I reinstalled the
float shroud and packed the insulation low this time. I'm thinking
the roiling is causing too much liquid gas to enter the pipe.

My understanding is that more air through the barrel carb makes
more bubbles, so theoretically the fuel-air mix should be the same,
only in greater volume. I'm not realizing much if any fuel savings
so that itself may mean I'm running too rich, literally flooding it.
The engine revs great while parked, but no acceleration, lots of
missing and hesitation when its in gear.

The damn thing is just running too out of time to know what's going
on. It won't even run on the barrel carb right now.

The plastic polycarbonate barrel had a warning label on it not to add
fluids over 140 F. A friend is securing a couple SS quarter-barrels to
weld muffler adaptors to do it up right, but unless I can get better
performance, he may have second thoughts. Of course the steel
barrels will be able to handle more heat throughput from a drain pipe
shroud around the exhaust pipe.
