Those pictures were actually taken last year (2005).The sapcer material i used was the same as wat Terro used and here it really isnt xpensive at Nashville rubber and Gasket.I gave $23 for a 12" x 10 foot piece of the 3mm thick.
I dont blame ya a bit for doing an open top chamber as drilling holes in s.s. isnt any fun.I never got around to finishing an open top design so I wish you success in that endevor.
i know a guy that used the 1/16" spacer material and he culd use water with a ph of tap water...well actually U think he used tap water but Im sure thats not any fun to deal with and I havent talked to him in a while...but seems like if tap water works then a ph of eaqual value shuld be able to draw some current.
That design you posted looks perty good...I dont think i wuld drill holes thru the plates tho.I'll give ya my 2 cents worth on that design or wat I wuld do if it were me...Instead of drilling holes in the plates I wuld cut a deeper slot in the bottom piece and drill a horizontal, small hole near the bottom ,leaving say a 1/4" space between the plate slot and the hole thru the slot'n material. Then I wuld drill a hole a verticle hole 1/2 the thickness of the plates down to the horizontal hole.If I ever get to do a serries cell again thats wat I wanna do for a water feed.If the losses were to great I wuld just make a bigger gap to the horizontal hole.A small filter culd be placed in the holes to maybe help keep losses down...if they make one that wuldnt hold the KOH and let it go thru too....I wuld still have a runoff/overflow tank and rout that back into the water feed as well.
Looks like someone went thru a great deal of work to get that box made....it does look good...nice job!!!!! 8)

Hi Kevin,

Yes, its not easy to drill holes on SS plate. About spacer material, the supplier quote me USD $30.55 for 12" x 12 foot. I will be collecting them tomorrow.

I'm going try the spacer without drilling holes on SS plate and use press method first. If encounter any leakage then I follow your way of building cell.

Pardon me. I just can't imagine on your suggestion of designing cell. If not much trouble, can you draw a simple diagram and post it.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'll try.......I just tried it one way but may see another better way....My intentions are basically modify'n the bottom platsic piece that holds the cells in place.

After think'n a minute...id need to do more study'n on the actual purpose of have'n a completely sealed unit.I dont have my cells together anymore and cant test em...the main reason tho is to be able to achieve a resoanonce reaction i believe so further studdies I have to do before actually building something like that again.Im not sure how the tolerances are of the wave forms so im gonna back off on that 4 now.

Plate condition

Postby kumaran » Thu Dec 28, 2006 9:42 pm

The plate condition from previous setup. I used rubber spacer & goop glue to seal the plate edges. The black sticky liquid at the edges is from rubber spacer which dilutes into KOH solutions. This caused the electrolyte solutions contaminated and allow less current to go through.

Anode & Cathode

After all plates wash cleaned. On left are cathode facing plates and on right are anode facing plates (brown colour). Plate surface colour differences are pretty obvious.

Plate surface after grinding using grinder. Check out the pattern. Later cross sand again by hand.

Wood (8" x 8") used to press plates together. Total of 7 SS bolts (8mm) are used.

SS connection lead plate

Thin SS connection lead. Later found out that this thin plate made the end plate bend a bit.

End plate

Postby kumaran » Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:38 pm

End plate placed on top of SS connection lead. I have bought two different sizes of PVC spacer. 2mm & 3mm thickness. From picture is 2mm spacer. Why? Read on.

Perforated SS plate

Postby kumaran » Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:44 pm

(Click on image to view larger version)

This is the reason. I placed perforated SS plate in between cell. For 7 cells will have total of 7 perforated plates in between cells. Now the space gap between cell is 5mm.
