I'm assuming that you'll use one of the trifilar
windings as the pickup coil to "trigger" the
pulsing power to the drive coils?
Initially, you may want to use 12 Volts for your
power source until you get it working and the
"timing" of the pulses adjusted.
The most efficient switches to pulse the coils
will be MosFets in conjunction with Gate Driver
Chips to assure that they turn fully on and off as
quickly as possible.
The 555 is useful for some applications but if
you want to be able to easily control the pulse
frequency as well as the pulse width you may
want to use a two stage pulse generator - such
as two 555s working together. One as the
Frequency Generator and the other as a Pulse
Width Generator fed by the first one.
There are several ways to accomplish what you
