The reason why the paper doesn't get destroyed by the acids is because they are rather weak. I discovered this when researching how to make cellulose into a fermentable sugar. It turns out the concentration of sulfuric acid needs to be over 70% for it to start to damage it. Really you need it around +90% for it to react right. Even Hydrochloric acid needs to be at boiling to have the same effect.
Therefore, yes, it seems like we could use cotton wool or paper as a membrane.
Also terracotta flower pots work well. I've tried this myself. You need to plug up the little drain hole in the bottom with something though. So I don't see why you couldn't use something like some cheap tiles with the glaze ground off.Statistics: Posted by Jehu — Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:07 pm
