The MK484 is a Radio on a Chip. A 10 transistor tuned radio frequency integrated circuit with automatic gain control. They sell for about $3.50, I have used them for even 7MHz shortwave, 1.5 volt power. I wish I had these as a kid in the '50s.

I don't think we would have been as happy, most of the fun was in scavenging all the gear, i think that made us more creative and what a supprise when it worked.

For my first Fox Hole Radio, I got the newest shiny razor blade I could, put it all together with the best care I could muster at 8 and it didn't give a peep! later I found out it was the rust and carbon that made the detector work. David Schmarder is the go to guy for crystal sets, they run around $200. Nice to look at.
