This is probably more like what you should be looking for. It allows you to set the voltage and/or current limit right where you want it. It is what I use on my bench. Just hunt around on eBay for one. They are a bit expensive when compared to automotive chargers or power supplies with less features, but the features are well worth it for that type of application.

Glad to help point out a power supply as that is a pretty universal workbench tool, but I'm burned out on hydroxy gas related topics and no longer do them. I'm sure you'll find someone else willing to help.
