Funny that I am working with refrigerants and seemed to have forgotten that Ammonia is a refrigerant and boils at a much lower temperature than water.
I tried exactly what you stated, and it's really quite easy. I recommend, however that this is done outdoors using a coleman cook-stove turned way down, using a pan with warmed water for the hot side, and an ice chest filled with ice and a canister with cold water inside, and the tube running down into it.
Up here, I would simply run the tube out the door to the canister sitting outside...because it's averaging +5 degrees day and -10 at night, and would not take all that long to completely process a whole 5 gallons.
Also found that "Clean John" (there's 2 varieties-red and green one is for outhouse and the other for septic) the one for the septic system can be used, as you only need a pinch of it, and will cause it to work. You can use active acidophilus, or Yogurt...or......
So yes quite effective. Talk to Billyhydrogen for methods to use refrigeration systems to make the NH3 into a super-chilled liquid.
