series cell design

Hi i'm new to this and I just don't understand series cell design at all. Does this mean having each set of plates in series or just the cell itself in series. How does series cell design work?? Any help would be appreciated

Sorry for asking such a stupid question i get it now. But i have another problem I live in New Zealand that means 250v power and a want to build a copy of the first device made from plexiglass. If i half each plates area and double the number of plates will that produce the same amount of gas. Sorry if this has already been asked. I find i think best in a group of people and my family consists of the science inept I just need someone to bounce idea off
