First, don't use tap water, rain water, just distilled as per the directions. found here. Also, he quotes as it heats up the amp draw go's up.. Now if you see the amps go up further.. Pour out some of your electrolyte and add more distilled water into your cell to reduce the amp draw..
Seems you are on the right track.. Please be careful. I would test run it on the car just to make sure it's still draws the required amps.. Bench testing and on the actual car your amps may vary.. I'm sure your car is putting out 13.6 to 14.2 volts.
