i got lucky my buddy works in a sheetmetal place and he is in charge of cutting up material just got a pile of plates nicly cut on the power shear

A lot of stainless steel workshops will let you raid their scrap pile if you simply just talk to the owner and tell him what you want it for.
I did that and he even cut the pieces to the same size for me on his shear. No charge.
The only drawback is that you get whatever grade you get, usually 304. You cannot beg and choose 316 at the same time.
