Hi Warren,
The intent of my submission was to point out that leaning mixture is NOT always harmful and may even be desirable if done correctly. The object is to protect the exhaust valves and an engine temp gauge (ETG) is NOT all that trustworthy.
An exhaust gas temp (EGT) unit is almost instantaneous in action whereas an ETG will advise you when it is ready, if at all, and by that time the damage may be done. It takes time for the rise in Temp to register, and time to disipate. E.G. Few people realise that if you burst a lower radiator hose the ETG may even lower, as there is no water to sense from before the engine siezes.(This is why engine protection units are usually fitted with 'water level sensors.) High temps from the exhaust can also take some time to register on the engine temp gauge.
As I said, I doubt that you will have a problem wih Hydroxy (unless you go to extremes) as it would help speed the burn. I was always of the opinion, correct or otherwise, that pinging was due as much to low octane as to advanced ignition, but my experience in that feild is decades old and may be out of date. On the other hand Hydroxy may have the same effect as raising octane levels.
TO ALL
Have fun, take care, and enjoy 2008.
