The base of the Coke bottle that I was using for my simple electrolyser.
After about 3 weeks, the bottle began leaking.
On close examination, cracks could be seen in the base of the bottle.

A closer look at the same bottle base.
These cracks are very similar to the ones that appeared in the bottles that I used in my explosion tests.
Though there was no pressure build up, and no heating beyond 30 degrees C, the plastic failed.

It looks like the bottles just aren't up to the task of containing the Sodium Hydroxide solution.

So, back to the drawing board then   .

Perhaps I should look at stainless steel containment vessels.
These would work well, but may be a little difficult to see through   .

Perhaps I could use glass, but I'd need to be very sure of my bubblers!

I see a lot of good looking plastic designs on this forum, but now I'm worried that I will see a recurrence of this problem.

Hmmm.
