today at work the batteries in my walkman were dying. AM signals require less power than FM..why is that?

It must depend on how the circuit is implemented .

I don't think it depends on the WaveForm ..

Even a simple FM detector requires more componentry, hence current draw, than an AM detector. On top of that you add pilot signal detection (to determine if the signal is mono or stereo), and the stereo channel decoders for a stereo signal and it adds up to a whole lot more circuitry requiring power.
