All I report is what I have used in the car industry. A clamping set of jaws secure the 2 parts to be joined and this is where the spot weld takes place. I guess it is posible that the electrodes are recessed in the clamping fingers and only throw an arc being only say 1mm away. I never thought of it that way til now.
