Info on getting wave data please.

As i can't afford a 'scope at the moment i'm using a dmm with a data logger programme to try and get some info on khz and duty cycle,problem is i get a few readings then nothing unless i move one of the probes away then back. I'm taking them directly from the plate contacts with everything switched on--i get the most consistant results if i hold one probe a little bit away from making contact. I've tried on 3 pwm circuits with the same problem--any help or guidance would be appreciated,thanks,Dave.

thanks chemelec,sorry i haven't been here to reply earlier but all sorted now,so i can continue.I'm presently experimenting with a multivibrator set up and getting good square waves at close to 50% duty at output pin and double the frequency at the oscillator pin when running in astable mode--just bringing the the frequency down to a more suitable level at the moment(output pin gives 46kHz x 2 at osc. pin).
Completely starting afresh with everything and enjoying the learning again,regards,Dave.
